Cooper Design Space Turns 100
The Cooper Building, an iconic Los Angeles landmark, proudly celebrated this week its 100th anniversary and its remarkable and continuing contribution to the development of the city of Los Angeles. Since its grand opening in 1924, this historic building has stood as a testament to architectural innovation and the rich history of our community. The building was constructed by clothing manufacturer Milton G. Cooper in 1924 and has kept a strong connection to the garment industry throughout the years, having been LA’s premier address for fashion industry showrooms into the 1940s and 1950s. It has further evolved and adapted throughout the latter part of the 21st century, remaining true to its roots of fostering creativity and innovation, particularly in the fashion and design industries. Acquired by the Stanley and Anita Hirsh family in the 1970s, the family subsequently worked with the LA City Council to establish the city’s first Business Improvement District, and in 1996, renamed the neighborhood the Fashion District. Today the Cooper Building is known as Cooper Design Space and is home to over 500 of LA's most creative premium fashion brands and individuals emphasizing the cutting edge of West Coast Style. Premier fashion showrooms such as Place Showroom, Findings, Agency Showroom, Butik Showroom, Focus Showroom, One of Eight Showroom, Lefties, Kristi Harris Showroom, and Le Trend, as well as the Brand Assembly trade show are central to the buyer market events throughout the year.
To commemorate this milestone, on Monday October 7, 2024 the Cooper Building as part of the Fashion District’s October Buyer Market, hosted a 1920’s themed cocktail reception for its buyers and showrooms.
Margot Garcia, the general manager of Cooper Design Space, noted: "This building is more than just a workspace; it is a cornerstone of our community’s fashion and garment heritage and an enduring inspiration to our city’s resilience and progress.”
