Lobby Artist Profile - Júlia Godoy
Júlia Godoy (b. Goiás, Brazil, 1996) is an artist based in Los Angeles, California, known for her use of handmade pigments and paints derived from foraged natural materials. She meticulously collects bones, ash, plants, soil, and insects from her immediate environment, which she processes into pigments using a mortar and pestle. These pigments act as a conduit, linking the physical landscape to her intangible memories and emotions. Her work reflects her experiences as a Brazilian immigrant and the space between two cultures.
Júlia’s artistic practice explores themes of rebirth, transformation, and human connection, driven by her belief that the physical materials she employs carry their own intrinsic memories. She is intrigued by how these fragments of memory resonate throughout her paintings, and how they manifest in layers of color, texture, and movement on the canvas. Through a process both intuitive and deliberate, she builds atmospheric compositions that evoke a sense of time, place, and longing. Her paintings, often imbued with muted earth tones and ethereal washes of color, feel like remnants of fleeting moments- simultaneously familiar and distant. By working with materials intimately tied to the land, Júlia creates art that is both deeply personal and universally resonant, inviting viewers to reflect on their own connections to nature, memory, and belonging.
